about

Boundary Street is not just a song about a street in Brisbane, Australia. It is about a dark and shameful part of our nation's history. The song is a fictional story seen from the point of a view of someone looking out the window of their Boundary Street home at a time when First Nations Peoples were treated inhumanely, unfairly and unjustly. The song contends that while Boundary Street may no longer be a literal boundary for our First Australians, perhaps some of those boundaries still exist within each of us.

lyrics

I lived on Boundary Street in a different time
Out my window at 4pm sharp, I hear a whip and a cry
There are four mounted police pushing black workers home
It’s 4 o’clock on this West End street and only white people roam

And though times have changed in some ways
I can still hear the cries
On Boundary Streets
Of the mind

He worked for his colonial lord, Logan was the name
Up there on the back of his horse wondering who is to blame
Black or white, convicts, police, I can see in his eyes
Captain Logan, we all could agree, deserved our despise

And though times have changed in some ways
I can still see his eyes
On Boundary Street
In my mind

Light fades and so does his gaze, as the day’s end arrives
I see him work here all day but he’s gone before the night
He works over Boundary Street and each day joins the line
When will we no longer see boundaries of the mind?

And though times have changed in some ways
I can still see the signs
Of Boundary Streets
And though times have changed in some ways
I can still hear the cries
On Boundary Street
I can still see the signs
I can still see the signs
I still see the signs
